San Juan de los Lagos is the second most important center of Catholic faith in all of Mexico. After the Guadalupe Sanctuary in Mexico City, San Juan de los Lagos is the site that receives the largest number of pilgrims. This town centers its activities on the small image of the Vírgen de San Juan, which alone draws more that five million pilgrims each year.

Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos Basilica Cathedral

Constructed at the end of the eighteenth century, the church has two impressive Baroque towers. Inside, an altarpiece housing the image of the Vírgen de San Juan de los Lagos stands out.

The Primer Milagro Well

A seventeenth century architectural ensemble marking the place where the Vírgen de San Juan first appeared.

Municipal Presidency

Dating from the eighteenth century, this building, covered in cantera stone, has had many uses. It preserves a mural by the master painter Martín de la Torre which presents the most relevant people in Mexican history.

The Culture House.

This is a historic construction from the eighteenth century that accommodates cultural expressions of painting, theater, Christmas pageants, and provides language and computer classes. Open Mon.-Fri.

The John Paul II Esplanade

This is an area that commemorates the 1990 papal visit that brought together almost 400,000 young people.

La Vírgen de la Candelaria Festival

Processions, dances and fireworks. January 25-February 2.

La Asunción Festival

The only time of year that the Vírgen de San Juan is moved to the atrium of this temple. August 1-16.

Spring Festival

Coinciding with the Vírgen María festival, these two traditional events consist of pilgrimages, running of the bulls, serenades, dances, amusement rides and mojigangas (giant dancing dolls). The month of May.

From the Kitchen: candied fruit (biznaga cactus and sweet potato) and a milk and nut candy.

Arts & Crafts: embroidery and drawn thread work (duvets, tablecloths, bedspreads), leather goods.
