This pre-Hispanic city reached its apex between 1100 and 1400 AD. The site covers more than 123 acres, so it was probably the largest settlement in the state, spreading out from both banks of the Verde or Colima River. Inside are ceremonial spaces, plazas, central altars and ball-game courts.

The site was first explored by archeologist Vladimiro Rosado Ojeda, who discovered a pyramid with what remained of a staircase and gradients carved in bas-relief. The carvings consist of 36 tablets – nine per each gradient – depicting gods like Tláloc and Ehécatl. Among the buildings at the site are the Ossuary, Pyramid and Great Platform.
