Villa de Álvarez

Calle de Villa de Álvarez

Located 10 minutes northwest of Colima, this city has gained fame throughout the region for the famous charro and bullfight festival that has been held here annually since 1857. Named in honor of General Manuel Alvarez, the first governor of the state, it officially became a city in 1991.

Villa de Alvarez is also known for its ever-popular “cenadurías”, casual restaurants that specialize in regional dishes like sopitos, enchiladas, sopes gordos and tostados.

San Francisco de Asís Parish Church

A pair of blue towers contrast with the yellow domes of this neoclassical-style church, built in 1903. The portico is supported by Ionic and Corinthian columns. Nearby are the attractive town square and traditional colonnades known as “portales” which add to the provincial atmosphere. Opposite the main square.
