On the riverbank of the Sonora River, Ures is the starting point for this tour. Its name means “savage cat” in Ópata Indian. Founded as a mission town in 1636 with the name of San Miguel Arcángel de los Ures Mission (others say that it was founded in 1644 by Jesuit Francisco Paris), it served as the state’s capital city from 1838 to 1842 and from 1847 to 1879. In 1998, it was bestowed the title of Heroic City. Today, the city is a testament to the calm and relaxed reverence felt for the rich historical legacy of its past.
