Plaza Principal de NacozariThis town’s founding dates back to the year 1660 when the first mines in the region were discovered. The word Nacozari means among prickly pear cactus fields. The town’s complete name is ascribed to the railroad manufacturer, Jesús García Corona, who gave his life, along with twelve companions, to save the town from a dynamite explosion in 1907. Today, copper mining continues to be the main economic activity, followed by ranching.
The town’s architectural heritage, dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, can still be appreciated today. Examples include the Municipal Palace, the Nacozari Graphic Gallery, the Silvestre Rodríguez Museum and the Cuesta Castle. Visitors should visit the old, abandoned mining towns of Pilares and Santo Domingo, as well as El Huacal, Aqua Zarca, El Dique, El Tápiro and La Angostura Dams. The International Largemouth Bass Tournament, which is held every October in La Angostura, attracts competitors from throughout Mexico and the United States. Tels. 01 (634) 3420 206 / 07.
