Bavispe

Plaza de BavispePlaza de BavispeFranciscan Friar Silvestre de Cárdenas founded this place of the palms (as it is known in the Ópata language) as a mission from 1635 to 1636. According to the town’s historical records, in 1887 an earthquake struck the town, and it was completely flooded by the waters of the Bavispe River. After the flood, the town was relocated to higher ground – which is where the town remains today.

Due to the town’s natural resources, ranching and agriculture represent the main activities of the municipality. However, these resources also lend themselves to eco-tourism activities. Visitors find a mixture of vegetation that combines mesquite and Mexican ocotillo with live oak, Mexican oak and thin leaf pine. There are also several species of fauna living among the vegetation. Examples of these are the ocelot, jaguar, Gila monster and a large variety of birds, including cardinal and quail, among others. Consider a visit to the main plaza where the San Miguel Arcángel Temple is located.
